Where Am I -   Tax, JSA and Other Benefits

Tax, JSA and Other Benefits

Do I still pay tax when I apply for my JSA

The Jobseeker's Allowance personal allowance is taxable, if you have been in previous employment and have been paying tax.

If you are a school leaver or a student you will not have paid any tax previously so will be taxed as a single person.

What happens to my benefits when I find a job?

You might have to give up some of your benefits if you find a job, but you could also get other kinds of support - such as Working Tax Credit. If you find a job and you're earning a low income, you might be able to get Working Tax Credit. You might also be able to get Child Tax Credit if you have children.

To find out about tax credits, visit www.hmrc.gov.uk or call 0845 300 3900.

If your job doesn't work out and you have to claim benefits again within 12 weeks, you might be able to put in a claim to get the same benefits you were getting before you started work. Jobcentre Plus can help you make sure you don't lose out financially and tell you how your benefits might be affected.

When you do find work, you may still qualify for help with your rent or Council Tax through Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit.

For more information about housing benefits contact your local authority. You can find the address of your local authority in the business numbers section of the phone book.
