What redundancy means
Redundancy is the dismissal of an employee for any of the following
reasons:
- The employer ends the business for which the employee is employed.
- The employer closes the workplace where the employee is employed.
- The need for that particular type of work to be done, either at
that workplace or in the company as a whole becomes less.
Resignation is not the same as redundancy. If an employee makes the
choice to resign from a job, he can not then attempt to claim redundancy
payments.
Transfer of an Undertaking should also be mentioned at this point. This
is when a company, or part of a company is transferred over to another.
The employees concerned move across while retaining the terms and conditions
of their existing contracts.
